Project: Red Bull Flugtag
Location: Dubai Creek Park, Dubai, UAE
A local agency who have handled a number of Red Bull Events, approached us to design and build the takeoff ramp for the Flugtag competition being held in Dubai. We have created similar floating ramps for them in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, however the Dubai site had a number of complications and challenges.
After carrying out an underwater survey, we had to extend the structure in order to clear a submerged barge that had been abandoned on the creek bed. A pivoting access ramp was also designed to take into account the high variation in tidal levels, and numerous anchorage points were identified in order to hold the structure against the strong currents.
The finished pontoon structure was in excess of 36m in length and over 12m wide. A total AquaDeck count of almost 1,000 units was utilised to configure the structure.
The scaffold was built on top of the pontoon and secured to the structure to ensure that the entire unit was secure and stable. Branding was then suspended around the scaffold to create the desired effect, while safety nets were added to prevent competitors from accidently coming off the side of the launch runway.
Build time for the pontoon units was one night. Recovery of all units and return of the site was also completed in one night.
